HILO
Tsunami Story Festival April 1

Advertiser Staff

The Pacific Tsunami Museum's fifth annual Tsunami Story Festival fundraiser is called "A Taste of Mamo Street" and will feature an imaginary stroll down what older residents remember as "the Times Square of Hilo."

Mamo was once a colorful boulevard of shops selling noodles, flowers, chickens, fish, comic books and crack seed. The 1960 tsunami forever changed life on the street, reducing buildings on the east side of the street near Hilo Bay to splinters.

The festival and dinner will be April 1 at Hilo's Sangha Hall at 6 p.m. Tickets are $25 per person and are available at the museum, KTA Super Stores and at Oceanic Time Warner Cable.
