A 2-year-old girl was killed and a 4-year-old boy seriously injured when a sport utility vehicle backed over them in a private driveway in Punalu'u yesterday morning.
The two children were playing in the driveway when a 2006 Chevy TrailBlazer driven by a 24-year-old Punalu'u woman struck them at 10:32 a.m., said police vehicular homicide investigator Sgt. Danny Kaholokula.
The girl was taken in critical condition to Castle Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead on arrival.
The boy was in serious condition at the hospital.
The medical examiner's office identified the girl as Teysia Aku.
Police said the accident happened at 53-224 Kamehameha Highway. A couple at the home last night would not comment and asked for privacy.
The death is classified as a non-traffic fatality since it occurred on private property.
On Dec. 14, 2006, a 1-year-old boy was fatally injured in Kahalu'u when a minivan backing up in the family's driveway ran over the toddler.
