SWIMMING AND DIVING

'BOWS FALL SHY OF FINALS

Both University of Hawai'i divers and its lone swimmer missed making it to finals yesterday on the first day of the 2007 NCAA Women's Division I Swimming and Diving Championships in Minneapolis.

Freshman Emma Friesen just missed out on All-America honors, finishing 17th in the 1-meter springboard preliminaries with 303.15 points — four points short of advancing to the final rounds. Senior Megan Farrow, competing with a nagging injury, finished 32nd, with 273.7 points.

The first eight places in each event earn All-America honors; nine through 16 are honorable mention.

Senior Nicole Mackey, competing in her fourth NCAA Championships, placed 46th in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:02.20.

Friesen and Farrow compete on the 3-meter springboard today while Mackey swims in the 100 backstroke.
