Ala Wai Canal vegetation gone

Low-growth vegetation was removed near the Kapahulu end of the Ala Wai Canal this month after complaints by residents and canoe clubs.
The city removed the overgrowth because of debris collecting in the area and illegal camping in the bushes and shrubs, said Mike Smith of the city's Department of Parks and Recreation.
There were complaints about the stench and increased rodent population.
Some golfers who use the nearby Ala Wai Golf Course also complained about recent car break-ins.
"For visibility and cleanliness reasons, we had to clear that area out," Smith said.
