A 20-year-old Kalihi man was indicted yesterday by an O'ahu grand jury on a charge of "inflicting substantial bodily injury" on the 3-year-old daughter of his girlfriend.
The five-count indictment charging Shawn Bangloy with second-degree assault and abuse of a household member superseded yesterday's scheduled District Court preliminary hearing for determination of probable cause for his warrantless arrest last weekend.
Bangloy is free on $40,000 bail pending Circuit Court arraignment, which will be scheduled within the next 10 days.
The injured child was brought to Kapi'olani Medical Center for Women & Children on March 13 by her 19-year-old mother, Monica Bianca Villa, who was later charged with misdemeanor first-degree endangering the welfare of a minor. The hospital reported the child's injuries, described by a physician as "substantial and serious," to police for investigation.
The girl had suffered second-degree burns on her buttocks and facial cuts, according to a police report filed in District Court.
Bangloy allegedly admitted to police that on March 11 he struck the child numerous times, squeezed her arms, bit one arm, and burned her with a night lamp.
