'Bows have long break after upcoming series

There are only three opportunities left to catch Hawai'i baseball this season.
The Rainbows resume Western Athletic Conference play with a three-game series against San Jose State starting Friday at Les Murakami Stadium. Then it will be another three weeks before they play at home again, when they host Louisiana Tech April 20 to 22. Then there is about a month gap before the Rainbows return for the final homestand when they play Fresno State May 19 to 21.
Hawai'i (21-9 overall, 2-1 WAC) is coming off a closely contested series win against Nevada (15-14, 1-2). Each game went down to the wire. The Rainbows rallied late for their two wins, as did the Wolf Pack in their sole victory. Friday's dramatic 5-3 win ended with Evan Zimny's three-run, towering home run to right with one out in the bottom of the ninth. It was UH's first game-winning home run since Feb. 17, 2002, when Brian Bock led off the bottom of the 10th inning in an 8-7 win against UCLA.
Focus now is on San Jose State (16-10, 1-2), which lost 2 of 3 against New Mexico State over the weekend at home to start conference play. The Spartans host Stanford tonight and arrive here tomorrow. (A game with San Francisco State last night was rained out.)
Spartans coach Sam Piraro said in a telephone interview last night he is still looking for some stability in his starting rotation. His probable starters are freshman Spencer Snodgrass (2-2, 3.31), sophomore Scott Sobczak (2-1, 4.26) and senior Steven Vidal (1-1, 4.64), all right-handers. Piraro was not sure of the order they would pitch.
The Spartans have two players from here in outfielder Chris Balatico (Mililani '03) and infielder Brett Hasegawa ('Iolani '06). More on them will be in tomorrow's Homegrown Report.
UH-HILO
Division I independent UH-Hilo Vulcans (5-24) will try to snap a seven-game losing streak when they host Air Force (5-20) in a five-game series. There are single games at 7 tonight, 6 p.m. tomorrow, 3 p.m. Friday and a doubleheader noon Saturday, all at Wong Stadium.
Dustin Gilmore leads UHH's staff with a 2-0 record and 3.38 earned run average.
Infielder Michael Higa leads the team with 24 RBIs and is batting .330. Outfielder David Chu leads the club with three home runs.
HPU
The Division II Sea Warriors split a doubleheader at UC San Diego yesterday, losing the opener, 8-3, before taking the nightcap, 8-5, to split the four-game series.
Former Rainbow Kaimi Mead (2-1) pitched a seven-inning complete-game win for the Sea Warriors (17-11).
The Sea Warriors continue their road trip with a five-game series at nationally ranked Sonoma State (24-5). A single game will be played tomorrow with doubleheaders on Thursday and Friday.
Vance Otake (Maui '03) is on the Sonoma State roster, which also includes former Rainbows Tyler Wightman (2003) and Eli Rimes (2006). Rimes leads the team with a .410 batting average and seven home runs. Wightman is batting .365.
