Maui police Capt. Charles Hirata was honored Monday by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration for his initiative and dedication toward improving child passenger safety and traffic safety in Hawai'i and the Pacific Rim.
Hirata, a 30-year police veteran, is commander of the Lahaina District and a longtime advocate of laws protecting children riding in cars. He also is a certified child car seat inspector who has organized numerous free inspection events.
Hirata was the only Hawai'i recipient of the public service award, which was announced during the 25th annual Lifesavers conference in Chicago.
