Fire again hits state forest land

Advertiser Staff

A brushfire that consumed 240 acres of state forest land in the West Maui Mountains was declared under control at 3 p.m. yesterday.

The blaze started Monday evening, said Glenn Shishido of the state Division of Forestry and Wildlife. Because it occurred in an area burned in a previous fire, only grass, kiawe, haole koa and wiliwili trees were lost, he said.

County and state fire crews were assisted by Goodfellow Brothers bulldozers and two helicopters. With the perimeter secured, Shishido said, firefighting efforts were halted. The area continues to smolder and will be monitored for flareups.
