Soccer, basketball and volleyball standout Ashley Medcalf will become tiny Christian Academy's first Hawai'i High School Athletic Association Hall of Honor inductee and four-sport athlete Reece Alnas will be the first from Kamehameha-Hawai'i to join the distinguished group.

Medcalf and Alnas (football, basketball, baseball, track and field) were two of 12 seniors chosen for induction after the Hall's 13-member committee completed its two-day selection process yesterday.

The other honorees are:

  • Jazzmin Awa-Williams, Konawaena (basketball, softball);

  • Brandon Hardin, Kamehameha (football, track);

  • Keisha Kanekoa, Honoka'a (basketball, softball, cross country);

  • June Ann Lusk, Baldwin (softball, cross country, track and field);

  • Spencer McLachlin, Punahou (volleyball, basketball);

  • Hoku Nohara, Kamehameha (softball, wrestling, judo);

  • Miah Ostrowski, Punahou (football, basketball);

  • Keone Reyes, Kaimuki (football, basketball);

  • Richard Torres, Kahuku (football, wrestling, judo);

  • Scott Smith, Saint Louis (football, basketball).

    Each inductee will receive a $2,000 college scholarship and will be honored at the Hawai'i High School Athletic Foundation Awards Recognition Dinner at 5:30 p.m. June 3 at the Sheraton Waikiki. The keynote speaker will be University of North Carolina men's basketball coach Roy Williams, and proceeds from the dinner will go toward the HHSAA Foundation, which helps supplement the costs of 29 state championship events.

    The Honolulu Advertiser will be a title sponsor of the Hall for the first time. It was formerly known as the Nissan Hawai'i High School Hall of Honor.

    This year's class will bring the total number of inductees to 300, representing 52 high schools since 1983.

    Medcalf, a defender in soccer, led Pac-Five to the inaugural Division II state championship this past season and was the only Division II player named to the Interscholastic League of Honolulu's all-star first team. She was named to The Advertiser's All-State second team and will play for nationally ranked Rutgers University in the fall.

    In basketball, Medcalf was one of the state's top scorers and an ILH Division II all-star first team selection in 2006 (this season's all-star list has yet to be announced), and she was one of 12 players statewide selected to compete in a prestigious tournament in Santa Barbara, Calif.

    In volleyball, she was named to the ILH Division II all-star second team.

    Christian Academy, located near Red Hill, has an average of only 21 students per grade.

    Alnas was a Big Island Interscholastic Federation football all-star first team selection as a defensive back the past two seasons and helped the Warriors qualify for the Division II state tournament both years. In basketball, he was an all-BIIF first team guard who helped the Warriors advance to the state semifinals after ending 'Iolani's five-year run as state champion.

    In baseball, Alnas was an all-BIIF first team outfielder.

    And in track and field, he won the long jump and the high jump at last weekend's track and field state championships.

    Awa-Williams helped Konawaena win two girls basketball state titles in the past four years and earned Advertiser All-State first team honors as a sophomore and junior.

    Hardin was an Advertiser All-State first team defensive back in football and won the 100-meter dash at last weekend's track and field state championships.

    Kanekoa was an Advertiser All-State first team selection in basketball as a sophomore and junior and helped the Dragons advance to the state semifinals the past three seasons.

    Lusk was an Advertiser All-State first team outfielder and leadoff batter in softball and helped the Bears win the state title this past season. In track and field, she set the state championship meet record in the 100 (12.25 seconds) as a sophomore and was the state champ in the 100 hurdles as a junior.

    McLachlin was a two-time Advertiser State Player of the Year in volleyball and helped the Buffanblu win three straight state titles. In basketball, he was named ILH Co-Player of the Year this past season and was named to The Advertiser's All-State first team, helping Punahou win its first league title since 1999 and advance to its first state championship game since that year.

    Nohara became only the second girl to win four wrestling individual state titles and was an ILH all-star first team third baseman in softball.

    Ostrowski became the second player to be named to The Advertiser's All-State first team in basketball four times. In football, he was a two-time Advertiser All-State first team selection.

    Reyes was a two-time Advertiser All-State first team selection in basketball and helped the Bulldogs win back-to-back O'ahu Interscholastic Association championships and their first state title since 1993 this past season. In football, he was named OIA White Conference Defensive Player of the Year after playing several positions on the line.

    Torres quarterbacked the Red Raiders to a football state championship and was named a first-team all-OIA Red Conference Eastern Division utility player. He also won the wrestling state title at 145 pounds and the state crown at 161 pounds in judo.

    Smith was named ILH Defensive Player of the Year this past season and was the league's Co-Player of the Year in basketball. He was an Advertiser All-State first team selection in both sports.
