Mililani graduate Balatico named WAC hitter of week

San Jose State senior outfielder Chris Balatico, a Mililani High alum, was named Western Athletic Conference baseball hitter of the week, the conference announced yesterday.
Balatico batted 9 for 14 (.643) to help the Spartans take two of three games from Nevada last week. He had three hits in each game and drove in six runs while scoring four.
It was his first WAC hitter of the week honor.
Kyle Howe of Nevada was named WAC pitcher of the week for his two victories, including one over Hawai'i.
UH nominated second baseman Jon Hee for hitter of the week and Mark Rodrigues for pitcher of the week.
GOLF
PUBLINKS QUALIFIERS
Miki Ueoka of Lihu'e and Summer Mizusawa of Hilo each shot 76 Sunday for co-medalist honors at the Lihu'e sectional qualifier for the U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links.
The qualifier was played at the par-73, 6,100-yard Wailua Golf Course.
Ueoka, Kaua'i High senior, and Mizusawa, a Waiakea student, qualified for the national public links tournament, which will be held June 18 to 23 at Kerney Hill Golf Links in Lexington, Ky.
Cy Okino of Honolulu (77) and Kelli Oride of Lihu'e (79) are the first and second alternates, respectively.

SOAP GETS YOU LESSONS
The U.S. Tennis Association and Lever 2000, lead sponsor of the U.S. Open Series, will conduct one of the largest tennis promotions in history intended to challenge Americans of all ages to "raise the game" on physical fitness. BOXING
BEACH CLEANING IN 'EWA
Members of the Hawai'i team that will compete in the U.S. Championships, May 29 to June 9 in Colorado Springs, Colo., will help with a beach cleanup at Hau Bush in 'Ewa Beach Saturday from 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
A fundraising concert will be held Sunday at 'Ewa Ranch from 5 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. Proceeds will help Hawai'i's Junior Olympic champions, who will compete at the U.S. Olympic Education Center in Marquette, Mich., from June 23 to July 1.
