The New England Patriots re-signed linebacker Junior Seau for a second season yesterday, bringing back the 12-time Pro Bowler a year after he ended a brief retirement for a chance at a Super Bowl ring.

The 38-year-old played 13 years for the Chargers and three for Miami before returning to San Diego — ostensibly to retire. He was lured out of retirement by the three-time Super Bowl champions, who were hoping to bolster their linebacker corps.

After signing in mid-August, Seau played in the first 11 games of the 2006 season and recorded 70 tackles before being placed on injured reserve when he broke his arm against the Chicago Bears Nov. 26.

CB MILLER BACK AT WORKOUTS AFTER ARREST

One day after his arrest for misdemeanor assault, the New York Jets' Justin Miller participated in the team's voluntary daily workouts yesterday at Hofstra and met with coach Eric Mangini. Miller has yet to be disciplined by the team, which is exploring its options under the NFL's new personal-conduct policy.

The league is conducting its own investigation, as Miller's case will be reviewed under the terms of the conduct policy, an NFL spokesman said.

Miller was arrested early Sunday after he allegedly punched a 26-year-old woman outside a Manhattan nightspot.

Bengals: Prosecutors say more testing is needed to determine whether wide receiver Chris Henry, who has been suspended by the NFL and is on probation in criminal cases in two states, failed a drug screening. Henry is on probation in Kentucky for letting minors drink in a hotel room he rented and in Florida for carrying a concealed weapon. Henry's agent insisted that the drug test was negative, and the Bengals said they were awaiting more information from authorities in Kenton County, Ky., where the screening took place. Meanwhile, the Bengals waived linebacker A.J. Nicholson hours after he appeared in court yesterday on a domestic violence charge. Nicholson pleaded not guilty to misdemeanor assault.

Bills: Cornerback Jason Webster agreed to a one-year deal yesterday, a move to bolster the team's inexperienced defensive backfield. The team lost Nate Clements to free agency this offseason.

Dolphins: Safety Yeremiah Bell signed a one-year, $1.3 million tender yesterday to remain with Miami.
