Penguins surf to Island music

Two Island recording acts are riding the wave in the new animated film "Surf's Up," premiering June 8 (and sneak-previewed at the Consolidated Ward Theatres last weekend).
'Ukulele soloist Herb Ohta Jr.'s "Kaulana O Hilo Hanakahi," a Lena Machado composition, and Nedward and Keoki Ka'apana's "Honeysuckle Rose," the oldie co-composed by "Fats" Waller, are on the soundtrack. (The tunes can be heard on Ohta's "Pure and Simple" album and Ka'apana's "Pana" disc, respectively).
The late Johnny Noble's arrangement of "Hawaiian War Chant," performed by Bob Wills & His Texas Playboys, also makes a splash, along with contemporary tracks by the likes of Green Day, Incubus, 311, Sugar Ray, Pearl Jam and Lauryn Hill, with classic hits by Brian Wilson, Percy Faith and The Surfaris also featured.
CELEBRITY CHAT OVER SUSHI
Actress Kelly Preston, in town for the Narconon-sponsored benefit dinner tonight at Stage restaurant at the Honolulu Design Center, showed up at Masa's Sushi at Ward Warehouse earlier this week and ran into deejay Lanai Tabura, musician Turk Cazimero and O Lounge owner Liz Watanabe, who were lunching there.
"We knew she looked familiar, then recognized her," said Lanai, who also is appearing as deejay Vince Fontaine in Army Community Theatre's "Grease" for the final times this weekend. Not missing a chance for stardust, Lanai mentioned that he knew Preston's husband, John Travolta, who starred in the movie version of "Grease." Preston said Travolta — who donned a dress and a fat bodysuit to play Edna Turnblad in the movie musical "Hairspray," starting June 27 — was flying in for the fundraiser. Travolta is a pilot.
"So we invited them to come see us Friday," said Lanai. No word if the Hollywood couple will pick up on the invitation.
