$25,000 award awaits principal

Island Insurance Foundation will present a Hawai'i principal with $25,000 tonight.
Eleven principals from around the state were nominated for the award — a $10,000 personal award and $15,000 to be used for a school project.
They will gather this evening at a fundraising dinner for the Public Schools of Hawaii Foundation at the Hilton Hawaiian Village Coral Ballroom.
This is the fourth year the award has been given out. It honors the late Masayuki Tokioka, founder of Island Insurance Co. Ltd.
The nominated principals are: Duwayne Abe (Salt Lake Elementary), Nathan Aiwohi (Hanalei Elementary), Myron Brumaghim (Nanaikapono Elementary), Stanley Kayatani (Kalihi-Kai Elementary), Fern Markgraf (Kahului Elementary), Lloyd Matsunami (Kaumana Elementary), Steve Nakasato, (Mililani Ike Elementary), Mitchell Otani (Kane'ohe Elementary), Norman Pang (Holomua Elementary), Charlotte Unni (Ala Wai Elementary) and Claire Yoshida (Konawaena Elementary)
Top semifinalists will get a $2,000 cash award. Each of the nominees already has received $500.
VOYAGER ART GALLERY OPENS
Voyager Public Charter School today will celebrate the opening of its new art gallery.
The gallery will showcase the work of its students, who will also serve as guides through the gallery.
The Voyager Petite Gallery, 685 Auahi St., is directly across from the school. The public is invited to the opening, but space is limited. The gallery opening will be from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
Art from students in kindergarten through eighth grade will be on display.

SUMMERTIME IN VIETNAM
Twenty students from Hawai'i public and charter high schools will embark on a 14-day trip next month to Hanoi, Sapa, Hue, Hoi An and Ho Chi Minh City through a scholarship with the Pacific and Asian Affairs Council's 2007 Summer Study Tour to Vietnam.
The group will tour the French Old Quarter in Hanoi, experience local life through home stays in Sapa and the Mekong Delta, and spend a night on a junk boat in Halong Bay. The program is funded by a grant from the Freeman Foundation.
The 2007 scholarship recipients represent schools on O'ahu, Moloka'i, Lana'i and the Big Island. Recipients were selected based on interest in Vietnam and international affairs, financial need, academic achievement, character and involvement in PAAC's high school program.
The recipients include: Ella Aiwohi (Kahuku High), Jessica Au (Kaiser High), Kaila Daniels (Lana'i High), Veronica Dye (Kalani High), Denarose Fukushima (Pahoa High), Sianha Gualano (Education Lab), Alyssa Hughes (Waiakea High), Brittany Hughes (Waiakea High), Sheville Lee (Farrington High), Joseph Masui (Moloka'i High), Michaela Mendiola ('Aiea High), Tara Milhoan (Waiakea High), Tomoyuki Miura (Roosevelt High), Ana Reidy (Kahuku High), Ka'ohele Ritte-Camara (Moloka'i High), Jesse Silva (Kailua High), Jill Springer (Kailua High), Pauline Tran (Roosevelt High), Nicholas Trisolini (Kahuku High) and Melina Zamalloa (Kaiser High).
The PAAC is a private, nonprofit organization that promotes increased understanding of world affairs, particularly Asia-Pacific issues.
