Mauia, Dolphins ink 4-year contract

The Miami Dolphins yesterday signed former University of Hawai'i fullback Reagan Mauia to a four-year contract.

Mauia is the fifth of the Dolphins' 10 draft picks to sign with the team.

He spent the past two seasons at Hawai'i, where he was a running back after beginning his college career as a defensive and offensive lineman.

Financial terms were not disclosed.


TRACK AND FIELD

SHEPPARD LEADS UH

University of Hawai'i sophomore Emily Sheppard finished seventh in the high jump on the first day the NCAA West Regional Championships yesterday at Oregon's Hayward Field.

Sheppard, the two-time Western Athletic Conference champion, jumped 5 feet, 9 1/4 inches, while senior teammate Mallory Gilbert, the WAC runner-up, cleared 5-7 1/4 and tied for ninth.

The top five individual finishers and top three relay teams earn automatic entry into the NCAA Outdoor Championship in June.

Junior Annett Wichmann finished 12th in the javelin with a mark of 143-2, and 14th in the high jump at 5-7 1/4.

Junior Meghan Weaver competed in the shot put but did not reach the finals out of her heat after placing 11th with a throw of 44-8 3/4. Sophomore Thalia Amanakis competed in the 400-meter hurdles prelims and clocked in at 1:03.07 to finish fifth in her heat.


GOLF

CHUN TIED FOR 17TH

Stanford's Mari Chun, a Kamehameha alum, shot a final-round 2-over-par 74 and finished tied for 17th yesterday at the NCAA Division I Women's Golf Championship at the LPGA International Legends Course in Daytona Beach, Fla.

Stacy Lewis of Arkansas shot a 66 and won with a 6-under 282. Chun finished at 299.

Waiakea alum Amanda Wilson of Arizona shot a 77 and finished tied for 34th at 303.

Baldwin alum Kelly Nakashima of Idaho shot a 78 and finished tied for 87th at 314. Duke won the team title.

An article in yesterday's Advertiser mistakenly said the event ended on Thursday.

CYR SECOND AT NAIA

Point Loma Nazarene University sophomore Sam Cyr, a 2005 King Kekaulike graduate, finished second at the NAIA Men's Golf National Championship at Plymouth, Ind., yesterday.

Cyr, who had a two-stroke lead after Thursday's third round, shot a two-over-par 74 in the fourth and final round to finish at 3-under 285.

Oklahoma City's Daniel Mitchell won the tournament with a 6-under 282. Oklahoma City also won the team title while Point Loma Nazarene was ninth.

KONO NETS DONATION

Stephanie Kono's participation in the Thunderbird International Junior golf tournament in Scottsdale, Ariz., this weekend will mean a $1,000 donation from the event's title sponsor to the Institute for Human Services Hawai'i.

The Thunderbirds, a Phoenix-area civic organization, contributes a combined $47,000 to 43 of the junior golfers' favorite charities.

Kaua'i's Mark Scheibach will be one of four local qualifiers at the U.S. Open sectional qualifying at Murietta, Calif. Another golfer was listed in a column in Thursday's Advertiser.
