HILO, Hawai'i — Kalani junior Dara Ajimine won her second straight girls individual title and Roosevelt junior Justin Kanda won the boys individual crown yesterday at the Billy Tees/Hawai'i High School Athletic Association Bowling Championships at Hilo Lanes.

Hawai'i Baptist repeated as boys team champion and Mililani won its second girls team title in three years.

Ajimine's nine-game total of 1,747 pins was one better than that of Pearl City's Jordeen Koizumi. Ajimine began the day in sixth place and rolled games of 237, 203 and 196 to fend off Koizumi, who had risen from eighth place.

Ajimine had a strike and spare in her final frame to seal the victory.

"I had to bowl really good today," she said. "I felt like I needed to win."

Kanda won with a total of 1,817, edging Konawaena's Daron Sugiyama (1,796). Kanda had been in third place after Thursday's six-game session, trailing first-place Sugiyama by 26 pins.

Kanda moved into first after rolling games of 202, 188 and 234.

"I finished strong," he said. "About the fifth frame (of the final game), I felt I could take it. I was nervous, but I pulled through and finished with my strongest game. It feels really great; words can't describe it."

HBA's boys started the day in third place behind Mililani and Kalani, but moved past the Trojans and Falcons with a strong team effort yesterday.

The Eagles had three bowlers finish in the top 10: Cody Gibo (fourth), Sean Arakaki (seventh) and Ethan Kawada (10th).

"Gibo was third in the (Interscholastic League of Hono-lulu), so he had a really good tournament," Hawai'i Baptist coach Greg Hayashi said. "Our boys bowled very well in the last three games."

It was the Eagles' third team championship in the past four years.

Mililani's girls also used a strong team effort to overtake first-day leader Waiakea.

The Trojans had three bowlers finish in the top 12: Jacqueline Lara (fourth), Diana Ishida (sixth) and Nani Siafuafu (12th).

"All the girls put in a great effort," Mililani coach Sue Stephens said. "If one person fell behind, another person would pick up her game. They worked together as a team, and that's why we won."
