Shutter lifts Punahou over 'Iolani, 48-14

Second-ranked Punahou capitalized on early turnovers to roll over Division II state tournament-bound 'Iolani, 48-14, yesterday in Interscholastic League of Honolulu football at 'Iolani's Kozuki Stadium.

Cayman Shutter passed for four touchdowns and 207 yards for the ILH Division I runner-up Buffanblu (7-2 overall, 5-2 ILH), whose season is done.

"It gets us momentum for next year," Punahou junior receiver Robbie Toma said. "The seniors gave us a good win."

The Raiders (4-6, 3-4) won the ILH Division II title last week. They don't play until Nov. 24 in the state semifinals at 'Iolani. It already had been determined that the ILH champion has the first-round bye in the DII tournament. 'Iolani will need that time off because quarterback Kela Marciel and running back Justin Yamamoto each suffered concussions early in yesterday's game.

"Knowing that they're tough kids, I know they'll be ready (in three weeks)," 'Iolani coach Wendell Look said.

Marciel lost a fumble after an 8-yard gain on the game's first play from scrimmage after the Raiders started possession at their 30. On fourth-and-9, Shutter hit Manti Te'o on a 28-yard touchdown pass. Robert Izuta's PAT gave Punahou a 7-0 lead.

Later in the quarter, John Foy intercepted Shutter and returned the ball to the Punahou 10, setting up a 1-yard touchdown run by Yamamoto. Kodi Look's PAT tied the score 7-7.

Toma returned the ensuing kickoff 91 yards for a TD to put the Buffanblu ahead for good.

"It was all the blockers," Toma said. "I just happened to have the football."

Shutter had TD passes of 14 yards to Mark Silverstein and 11 to Dalton Hilliard, and Siu Tafuna returned an interception 65 yards for a touchdown as Punahou took a 34-7 lead at the half.

Shutter's 24-yard touchdown pass to Toma in the third quarter made 41-7. Later, Hilliard ran 10 yards for a touchdown to make it 48-7, starting the running clock because of the league's 35-point differential mercy rule.

The Raiders stopped the running clock when Jarrett Arakawa hit Jordan Nakamura with a 14-yard TD pass early in the fourth quarter.
