The Rainbow Wahine soccer team took a giant step toward the Western Athletic Conference title with a convincing win over Boise State last night.
Hawai'i erupted with five second-half goals in a 5-0 win over Boise State in a fast-paced WAC game at the Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Stadium in front of 1,170.
The Rainbow Wahine (12-4-3, 5-1 WAC) close out the WAC regular season with a game against Idaho tomorrow at 5 p.m. The match will be broadcast live on KFVE-TV.
"I thought we killed their offense," Hawai'i coach Pinsoom Tenzing said. "Even in the first half, it was an entertaining game, even though we didn't put away our chances. I'm really pleased."
UH will try to clinch the program's third regular-season conference title with a win against Idaho. If it ties, it will have at least a share of the title; a win would give it the title outright.
Idaho, which defeated San Jose State, 1-0, last night, still has a chance to qualify for the WAC tournament with a win over UH.
"It's huge," Jessica Domingo said of last night's win. "We don't have to rely on other games. We still have to win Sunday against Idaho. They won and they're going to come out firing."
Forwards Taryn Fukuroku and Ambree Ako each scored their team-leading 10th goals, and freshman defender Chelsea Deptula, junior midfielder Kelli-Anne Chang and a Boise State own goal helped the Rainbow Wahine extend its school record to eight straight wins at home. UH is undefeated (10-0-1) at the WPSS this season.
After a scoreless tie at halftime, Hawai'i scored three times in the first nine minutes of the second half.
"Second half, everything just broke open," Fukuroku said. "We were missing so much in the first half."
Deptula scored on a blast to the left side of the goal off the header of a Boise State defender one minute, 13 seconds after the whistle blew.
Fukuroku scored off assists from Domingo and Ako. Domingo, who tied the single-season assists record of 10, passed the ball up the center of the field to Ako, who one-touched it to Fukuroku for a clear pathway to the goal in the 52nd minute.
Boise State scored an own goal in the 54th minute when a Broncos defender tried to clear the ball but instead put it in the goal.
Chang ripped a 25-yard shot through the hands of Boise State goalkeeper Jennifer Burns in the 66th minute and Ako scored with just over five minutes to go.
