Lam wins Futures opener

Hawai'i's Chris Lam, the seventh seed in the Hilton Waikoloa Village Futures, won his first-round match yesterday at the Kohala Tennis Garden. Lam defeated American Trent Aaron, 6-4, 6-0.

Ikaika Jobe and Malino Oda, also from Hawai'i, lost their first-round matches. Jobe fell to Australia's Carsten Ball, 6-4, 6-2. Oda, who received a wild card into the event, lost to fifth-seeded American Chris Wetfengel, 6-4, 7-5.

Hawai'i's Henry and Jim Somerville, 43-year-old twins who received a wild card into the doubles main draw, lost their opening match to Australians Leon Frost and Troy Gillham, 6-4, 7-5. Waikoloa pros Oda and Nicholas Moxley also lost, falling to former Hawai'i state high school champions Brad Lum-Tucker and Jobe, 6-4, 7-5.

JONES A GUEST SPEAKER

Baseball manager Bobby Valentine, University of Hawai'i football coach June Jones and Beijing's sports marketing's Bin Yuan are among the speakers at the East-West Sports Summit today through Friday at the East-West Center.

Valentine is manager of the Japanese Pacific League Chiba Lotte Marines and former major league manager of the Texas Rangers and New York Mets.

Valentine is the first manager to win League Championships in both Japan and the United States.

FANNING WINS IT ALL

Australia's Mick Fanning clinched his first world championship at the Hang Loose Santa Catarina Pro in Brazil yesterday.

The final day of the event was run in 4- to 6-foot waves at Imbituba, Brazil.

Fanning won the contest, but actually clinched the world title earlier in the day when contenders Kelly Slater and Taj Burrow were eliminated.
