Takeyama lifts UH by Utah State in soccer

Koren Takeyama scored in the 101st minute to lift the University of Hawai'i women's soccer team to a 1-0 double-overtime win over Utah State in the Western Athletic Conference Tournament semifinals yesterday in Boise, Idaho.

Takeyama's goal gave the Rainbow Wahine (14-4-2) their first WAC tournament win in six years and surpassed the 2003 UH team for most victories in a season. Utah State ends its season at 9-11.

The Rainbow Wahine, victorious in seven of their past eight matches, will face Fresno State in tomorrow's final. The match starts at 10 a.m., Hawai'i time.

In yesterday's other semifinal, Fresno State (13-6-1) rolled over Boise State (9-7-3), 4-1.

U.S. WOMEN VICTORIOUS

Logan Tom scored 18 points yesterday as the United States defeated the Dominican Republic to stay undefeated at the volleyball Women's World Cup in Kumamoto, Japan.

Tom got 15 kills and three blocks to power the Americans to a 25-16, 20-25, 25-16, 25-18 victory and a 6-0 record.

Honolulu's Lindsey Berg (Punahou) and Robyn Ah Mow-Santos (McKinley, University of Hawai'i) played at setter for the United States. Berg had a kill, an ace and 10 assists, while Ah Mow-Santos added a kill to go with 17 assists.

The Nov. 2 to 17 tournament features 12 teams bidding for three berths at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

In other matches, Italy beat Poland 25-15, 25-15, 25-18 to maintain a perfect 6-0 record. Brazil eased past Thailand 25-12, 25-13, 25-20, improving to 5-1, as did Serbia after brushing aside Kenya 25-15, 25-16, 25-10. Cuba (4-2) defeated South Korea 25-20, 17-25, 19-25, 25-21, 15-10. South Korea dropped to 2-4. Japan downed Peru 25-18, 25-13, 22-25, 25-19.

CANEFIRES TOP HONU

West Oahu scored seven runs in the fifth inning and added five in the sixth as the CaneFires defeated the visiting North Shore Honu, 12-2, yesterday at Hans L'Orange Park. The CaneFires (10-19-1) racked up eight hits, but were aided by three North Shore (20-10) errors which led to six unearned runs.

In the late game at Hans L'Orange Park, the Honolulu Sharks (14-15-2) and Waikiki BeachBoys (15-15-1) played to a 2-2, nine-inning tie. Fuminori Yokogawa had two hits for Honolulu and scored the tying run in the eighth inning.
