AIRLINES

CELL-PHONE USE IN FLIGHT MAY BE AN IDEA WHOSE TIME HAS NOT COME

Nine out of 10 respondents to an International Airline Passengers Association survey said they would find it aggravating if the use of cell phones was allowed during flights, though U.S. travelers seem less perturbed about the idea than those in the United Kingdom.

The association surveyed 3,000 travelers following a U.K. proposal to allow cell phones on UK-registered aircraft across all European airspace. Forty-nine percent of U.S. travelers say they would be annoyed, compared with 69.8 percent in the U.K. "Extremely annoying and distracting ... a recipe for air rage," said one respondent.

Association spokesman Jonathan French, citing passengers' "deep sense of disquiet," suggested airlines take note. Information: www.iapa.com.

NEW YORK CITY

PLAN ON GETTING THERE VERY EARLY IF YOU WANT TO SEE MACY'S PARADE

Heading to New York and planning to catch the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade? It's the only event where you'll see the Pink Panther, Spider-Man and Woody Woodpecker hanging out together. The parade features clowns, floats, marching bands and plenty of celebrities who gather for the event. But the real stars of the show are the famous "falloons" (balloon/float hybrids). Gigantic helium balloons, representing every cartoon hero you can think of, tower over the crowds and bob along on their way Downtown.

The parade proceeds from 77th Street down Central Park West to Columbus Circle, then down Broadway to Macy's at 34th Street, finishing on 7th Avenue. Crowds thicken as the day progresses, so it's wise to find your spot early in the morning. Prime spots are at Columbus Circle and Times Square, but there are also good views from Duffy Square (at the intersection of 7th Avenue and 46th Street).
