Advertiser Staff

Spain overcame the strong play of Kaiser High and University of Hawai'i alum Clay Stanley to defeat the U.S. men's national team, 21-25, 25-20, 27-25, 25-20, yesterday in World Cup play at Matsumoto, Japan.

Spain, ranked No. 24 in the world, improved to 1-2 while the fifth-ranked Americans suffered their second straight loss and fell to 1-2.

Stanley, who started at opposite, scored a team-high 14 points on 10 kills, two aces and two blocks. Gabe Gardner, who started the third and fourth games at opposite in place of Stanley, scored 13 points on 13 kills.

"We started a little better but had trouble sustaining our level," U.S. head coach Hugh McCutcheon said. "We have to re-evaluate the way we work together. We have got the day off tomorrow, so hopefully we can get things back on track in the second stage."

The U.S. plays Bulgaria tomorrow.
