Honolulu slipped a few notches this year in a national magazine's annual list of the healthiest cities for women.

Self magazine listed Honolulu as the fourth-healthiest city in its survey published yesterday in its December issue. Honolulu had held the top spot in Self's 2006 list and was replaced this year by San Francisco.

The magazine examined data in more than 50 categories, including exercise and eating habits, heart disease and depression rates, and environmental factors, to rank 100 metropolitan areas. The magazine said the good news is that cities are doing more to help women and others be healthy by doing such things as building parks and paths, expanding insurance coverage, and banning smoking in public areas.

Following San Francisco as the healthiest cities are Nassau-Suffolk counties, N.Y.; San Jose, Calif.; Honolulu; and Burlington, Vt. The bottom five cities are Gary, Ind.; Detroit; Cincinnati; Oklahoma City; and Columbus, Ohio.

Honolulu was praised for its scores in four categories:

  • Healthiest breasts. The magazine looked at the percentage of women who die of breast cancer, as well as the number who get mammograms and breast exams. Honolulu is ranked second behind West Palm Beach-Boca Raton, Fla.

  • Best drivers. Honolulu ranks No. 2 behind New Jersey's Middlesex-Somerset-Hunterdon counties.

  • Fittest. The magazine gives the city a No. 3 ranking behind Orange County, Calif., and San Francisco.

  • Cleanest air. Honolulu is ranked No. 4 behind Cheyenne, Wyo.; Billings, Mont.; and Sioux Falls, S.D.
