Sharks leave stretch of beach

There were no sightings of reef sharks yesterday at Ka'anapali.
A 500-yard stretch of beach in front of the Hyatt Regency Maui was closed over the weekend when a large school of 'iao and nehu bait fish attracted the predators, said Randy Awo, chief enforcement officer for the Department of Land and Natural Resources on Maui. Six white-tip sharks about 5 to 6 feet in length were seen lurking in knee-deep water on Friday, he said. They were replaced by black-tip and gray sharks on Saturday and Sunday.
Awo said it is unusual to see that type of feeding behavior in one place over such a long period.
