BeachBoys, Honu prevail

Justin Sellers' run-scoring single with no outs in the bottom of the ninth inning lifted the Waikiki BeachBoys to a 5-4 victory over the West Oahu CaneFires yesterday in a Hawaii Winter Baseball game at Iron Maehara Stadium on Maui.
Emmanuel Garcia led off the BeachBoys' ninth with a triple to deep right-center. Sellers, with the count 1-1, then grounded a single up the middle to help Waikiki (4-2) win its third in a row.
Sellers and Garcia each had two hits and Michael Wilson hit a two-run homer for the BeachBoys. Brant Rustich (2-0) pitched the final 1 1/3 scoreless innings to earn the victory.
Craig Gentry's two-run double spiced a four-run seventh inning that gave the CaneFires (1-5) a 4-3 lead. The BeachBoys tied it in the bottom half on Antoan Richardson's sacrifice fly.
Elsewhere last night, Jamie Romak batted 3 for 3, including a double and homer, and drove in three runs as the North Shore Honu beat the Honolulu Sharks, 5-1, at Hans L'Orange Park.
Chris Vailaka drove in two runs and starting pitcher Shinya Nakayama allowed four hits and one run while striking out six in five innings to earn the victory as the Honu (5-1) beat the Sharks (2-4).

KONO TIED FOR FIFTH
Punahou School senior Stephanie Kono was tied for fifth after a first-round 2-over-par 74 yesterday in the Ping Invitational at the Karsten Creek Golf Club in Stillwater, Okla.
Former Big Island resident Kimberly Kim, who now lives in Arizona, shot a 77 and was tied for 13th.
Tiffany Lua, of Rowland Heights, Calif., shot a 71 for a one-stroke lead over 12-year-old Alexis Thompson of Coral Springs, Fla.
Lua, 16, was the only girl to shoot under-par, making four birdies and three bogeys.
Former Kaimuki High student Chan Kim, who now lives in Arizona, is tied for ninth in the boys field after a 3-over 75. Gregor Main, of Danville, Calif., leads Cory Whitsett of Houston by one stroke after a 68.
The 54-hole stroke play event has a field of 30 girls and 48 boys.
In the Mayakoba Junior Golf Classic in Mexico, Punahou's Anna Jang is tied for 12th after opening with a 6-over-par 77. Mexico's Alicia Malagon leads the 21-player field with a 70.
In the boys division, Honolulu's Bou-An Fujieki is tied for 26th after a 7-over 77 and Colton Knedler is tied for 41st after a 79. Eric Frazzetta, of Long Beach, Calif., leads the 55-player field after shooting a 66.
VOLLEYBALL
HILO 5-0 IN PACWEST
Hillary Hurley had 19 kills as Hawai'i-Hilo defeated Notre Dame de Namur, 26-30, 28-30, 30-17, 30-28, 15-13, yesterday in a Pacific West Conference match at Belmont, Calif.
Fabiane Seben and Kauwila Lavea each had 12 kills, Mary Claire Bolo had 11 and Desiree Agader contributed 12 digs and 62 assists to help the Vulcans improve to 13-5 overall and 5-0 in the PacWest.
Emily Evans had 23 kills for the Argonauts (6-15, 3-2).
Elsewhere in the PacWest yesterday:
Cami Johnson led Dixie with 18 kills and 17 digs.
Kelly Balanay had 22 kills, Antje Buskies added 17 kills and 16 digs, and Leslie Schipper contributed 14 kills for HPU.

UHH WINS TWO
Lacey Schreiner scored in the 38th minute as Hawai'i-Hilo defeated visiting Brigham Young-Hawai'i, 1-0, yesterday in a Pacific West Conference women's match at Kea'au High School field.
The Vulcans improved to 5-4 overall and 3-0 in the PacWest. BYUH fell to 8-5-1, 2-1.
In the men's match, Luis Lanz and Carlos Lopez scored as Hilo (5-5, 2-1) beat BYUH (6-8, 2-3), which got a goal from Brian Noguera.
