Live where you work — Live where you shop: "Lifestyle Centers," a new real estate trend that combines a creative mix of open-air upscale retail, restaurant and entertainment options, typically near residential developments. A panel presentation featuring developers of several such local projects — including the Ward Village Shops and entertainment complex and the planned Kapolei Commons breaking ground this year — will be held Oct. 18 by the Hawai'i Association of Realtors and the Hawai'i Society of Corporate Planners. The panel presentation is scheduled from 11:30 a.m. sign-in to 1:30 p.m. at the Hawaii Prince Hotel Waikiki, Mauna Kea Ballroom.
It will feature Kathy Inouye, chief operating officer for Kobayashi Group LLC, and Jeff Dinsmore, president of MKC Management LLC — a joint venture between the MacNaughton Group and the Kobayashi Group to develop new "lifestyle" shopping centers in Hawai'i. Inouye is a 25-year veteran of real-estate development, in the residential, master-planned residential and luxury resort development, hotel-condominium, school and office spheres. Dinsmore, in his various reincarnations with General Growth Properties and Victoria Ward Ltd., oversaw development of such retail giants as the Ward Village Shops, the Ward Entertainment Complex, Ala Moana Center expansion, and various other Ward properties. A "Lifestyle Exposition For the Boomer Generation" — a free event focusing on financial security, leisure activities, and health and wellness for those older than 50 — will be offered by Windward Community College Friday and Saturday. The event, "BOOMERS & BEYOND EXPO," will allow seniors — or those just looking toward retirement — a chance to talk to experts in various fields, including lifestyle, health, financial and personal security, housing options, education opportunities, clubs, volunteering and sports. Also available will be state, community and commercial service representatives, including AARP Hawai'i, the Alzheimer's Association, American Cancer Society, Panda Travel and the Social Security Administration. Free health screenings and workshops — on topics from Medicare prescription drug coverage, disaster preparedness, Social Security and Internet safety and more — also will be offered. The expo is scheduled 8:30 a.m..-2:30 p.m. Friday, and 8:30 a.m.-noon, Saturday in Hale Akoakoa, on the college's Kane'ohe campus. The latest in mobile "gadgets" — and what's in store for Honolulu on the wireless front — will be among topics discussed at the upcoming Hawai'i Telecommunications Association annual telecom conference. The gathering, "Enterprise Mobility," is scheduled Thursday at the Sheraton Waikiki hotel: 7:30 a.m., registration/breakfast; 8:30 a.m., opening plenary; 12:15 p.m., lunch; and 4:30 p.m., business mixer. It will be a full day of information sharing, including panel discussions by leading experts in the field as well as presentations. Chris Neisinger of Verizon Wireless will provide the keynote address on "Future IP Multi-Media Services" and Gordon Bruce, head of the city Department of Information Technology, will close the day with a presentation on global mobility and what's on the horizon for Honolulu.
