A federal judge yesterday sentenced a former Kailua elementary school teacher to 37 months in prison for multiple drug offenses.
U.S. District Judge Susan Oki Mollway's sentence for Bronwyn Kugle, 39, also included forfeiture of her Kailua home, which was used for drug activities.
Kugle was convicted of conspiring to distribute 1 kilogram of cocaine, more than 1,089 tab-lets of methylenedioxy-methamphetamine — commonly known as Ecstacy — and possession of a loaded firearm. She pleaded guilty June 14.
In a raid on her Kailua home on Feb. 13, federal agents and police also seized personal-use amounts of crystal methamphetamine.
Kugle was one of four O'ahu public school teachers charged with drug offenses in the past year. Their cases prompted the inclusion of mandatory drug testing for public school teachers in their most recent union contract. The American Civil Liberties Union has demanded the state not drug-test teachers, calling it a violation of their constitutional right to privacy.
Kugle, at the time a teacher at Ka'elepulu Elementary School, was arrested after she accepted a parcel shipped from California containing drugs that previously had been intercepted by federal agents.
