More reason to ride

While the fate of Hawaii Superferry remains in limbo, Honolulu's commuter ferry service just keeps on getting better — at least when it comes to accessibility.
On Monday, city officials announced that a free, park-and-ride lot with 40 stalls would be made available in Kapolei to encourage West O'ahu commuters to take TheBoat. This is in addition to the 23 carpool stalls at the Kalaeloa Barbers Point Harbor terminal, and other perks, including: free beverages and fares for the intitial runs, free wireless Internet service and affordable $2 fares.
So far, the city has shown that it gets it when it comes to providing a comprehensive transit plan for Honolulu. Free parking will make the ferry more accessible for many who could not use it otherwise. The lot, however, is temporary, so the city must use the next 90 days to come up with a permanent parking solution.
This temporary offer sends a promising message: Making transit work is a priority.
