POLICE BEAT
Felon on bail charged with new offenses

Advertiser Staff

A 32-year-old man was charged last night with armed robbery, burglary and kidnapping stemming from an Oct. 3 incident in Kailua allegedly committed while he was free on $100,000 bail for similar offenses.

Opherro G. Jones, 32, who has 12 aliases including Garry Lopaka Puuala, is accused of breaking into a Kihapai home with another unknown suspect to collect a $600 debt from a man. Police said Jones threatened the man with a gun.

Jones was arrested yesterday at 4:05 p.m. in Ka'a'awa. He is being held in lieu of $500,000 bail pending an initial appearance today in District Court.

Jones is a felon with 18 convictions. The Kailua case is the second in less than six months in which he is accused of using a firearm in commission of a crime. Police say they suspect he is involved with a group that is robbing drug dealers.

On Aug. 5, Jones was charged in connection with the June 15 robbery and kidnapping of a man on Round Top Drive. Police said that while Jones was pistol-whipping his victim, the gun went off, wounding Jones in the abdomen.

Police had arrested him Aug. 3 at Waikele Shopping Center for allegedly dealing marijuana out of a parked car. Police recovered a bag with two firearms, including an Uzi-type machine pistol, in a warrant search of the car.

Jones' convictions include four offenses of first-degree robbery and kidnapping.
