The University of Hawai'i men's basketball team came out in military-style camouflage shorts for last night's Twilight 'Ohana, and it appears with a little more basic training, the Rainbow Warriors will be ready for battle.
"We have to be soldiers before we can become Warriors," first-year head coach Bob Nash said. "I want us to be like the military in our approach in that we can't leave anything to chance and we always have to be ready."
Yesterday was the first day NCAA basketball teams could start practicing, and the 'Bows got started with an intrasquad scrimmage before a crowd of around 2,000 at the Stan Sheriff Center.
Senior Riley Luettgerodt scored a scrimmage-high 17 points to lead the White to a 38-32 victory over the Green.
"Whatever my role is this year, I'll adapt," said Luettgerodt, a 6-foot-5 guard/forward. "But I'll probably have to do a little more scoring this year, and that's fine with me."
The scrimmage lasted 20 minutes, with a running clock, so Nash said he was impressed with the offensive output.
"I thought our guys did a good job of pushing the ball, and doing some of the things we expect them to do," Nash said. "For one team to score 38 and the other 32 in that short amount of time is a good start."
Senior point guard Matt Gibson, who was the No. 1 draft pick for the scrimmage, led the Green with 15 points. He shot 5-of-7 from 3-point range.
"We looked good," Gibson said. "Our shooters were shooting well, doing exactly what we're supposed to do. We looked a lot better than I thought it would be."
Twelve of the 14 players who saw action in the scrimmage scored.
Bobby Nash added eight points, four rebounds and three assists for the winning White squad.
Among the new recruits, freshman point guard Kareem Nitoto looked flashy at times. He finished with five points, two assists and two steals for the White.
Among the newcomers on the Green, 6-9 sophomore forward Bill Amis had six points and four rebounds, and 6-7 sophomore forward Adhar Mayen had six points and three rebounds.
"There's a lot of potential on this team," Luettgerodt said. "The young guys all play hard, and I think they'll all help us down the line. The good thing is nobody is expecting anything from us this year, so I think we'll surprise a lot of people."
However, the players realized that last night was only a glimpse of what's to come the rest of this season. The 'Bows' first "real" practice is scheduled for today.
"Tonight was fun," Gibson said. "Tomorrow's not."
The scrimmage lasted 15 minutes.
Tanya Smith led the Green with five points and five rebounds. She had a chance to tie the score with 31 seconds left, but she made just one of two free throws.
Luettgerodt received a perfect score of 40 (four 10s) from the judges in the opening round when he took his shirt off just before throwing down a one-handed dunk. But Fitzgerald won the final with a score of 38 to Luettgerodt's 34.
"Riley definitely had me scared after he did his first dunk," Fitzgerald said. "I'm just glad I had more than him in the final."
Members of the UH women's team served as judges.
Luettgerodt said: "I wasn't expecting to make the final, that's why I busted it out early. If I had known I would make the final, I would have saved it."
