Field goal propels Bears over Lunas in OT, 23-20

Advertiser Staff

Brock Shishido kicked a game-winning, 26-yard field goal late in overtime as Baldwin handed Lahainaluna its first loss of the season with a 23-20 victory in a Maui Interscholastic League football game last night at War Memorial Stadium in Wailuku.

The Bears (6-1, 5-0 MIL), ranked fifth in The Advertiser's statewide Top 10 poll of coaches and media, also clinched the MIL Division I regular-season title with the win. Lahainaluna (6-1, 3-1), which competes in Division II, is ranked No. 7.

Lahainaluna led 20-13 going into the fourth, but Baldwin rallied late. Kainalu Garso recovered a fumble and returned it for 24 yards.

That helped set up Chansi Bolosan's touchdown with 4:49 remaining. Shishido's extra point tied the game at 20.

Lahainaluna led 14-13 at halftime and went ahead in the third quarter on Bryson Williams' eight-yard score.

The loss narrows Lahainaluna's chances of clinching the Division II title. Kamehameha-Maui is 2-2 in Division II play and hosts Lahainaluna next Saturday.

Also in the MIL yesterday, King Kekaulike defeated Maui, 22-6.
