Garden tip: If you have weeds where you don't want them, try pouring boiling hot water on them, according to "1,001 Ways to Save the Earth," by Joanna Yarrow. If that doesn't work on a particularly vigorous weed, then be sure to find a product that targets that problem, rather than a broad-based toxin.

KEEP IT SIMPLE

SOMETIMES, RESILIENT BOOKS ARE BEST KIND

Got a wee one on your holiday list? Hard-block board books that withstand the age of teething and let's-see-if-this-comes-apart make a good option. And here's one with a Hawai'i theme: "Geckos Surf." Illustrated by Jon Murakami (Beach House, $7.95), it's simple and, more importantly, silly. At bookstores or at www.beachhousepublishing.com.

FINAL WORD

"I really believe in the Zen of 'The Price is Right.' When we wish others well, we feel great. And we can feel that way all the time. We have that choice in this world."

Drew Carey | who has taken over for Bob Barker on "The Price is Right," in TV Guide
