Military part of life at Hickam Elementary

What are you most proud of? "Our students' flexibility and resiliency in spite of the high transient numbers, deployment and stresses associated with the military culture and current situation in Iraq," said Hickam Elementary School Principal George Okino.

"Hickam Elementary also is proud of the strong parent, school and community support for our students."

What is your biggest challenge? Dealing with the fluctuations in enrollment, Okino said, noting that the school enrollment count set in August is quickly outdated due to ongoing rotation of military families throughout the school year.

Special events: Fall Festival, curriculum fair, performing arts (chorus, play presentation and speech), sports events (volleyball and basketball), meet-and-greet with parents, and an Air Force Falcon visit.

History: Hickam Elementary was established in 1950 and is named after Lt. Col. Horace Meek Hickam, an Army Air Corps pioneer who foresaw the important role the Air Force would take in fighting wars. He died in 1934. Hickam Air Field was named in his honor.

Testing: 2006 Stanford Achievement Test. Listed is the combined percentage of pupils scoring average and above average, compared with the national combined average of 77 percent. Third-grade reading, 92 percent; math, 98 percent. Fourth-grade reading, 97 percent; math, 94 percent. Fifth-grade reading, 88 percent; math, 88 percent. Sixth-grade reading, 91 percent; math, 94 percent.

2006 Hawai'i State Assessment test. Listed is the combined percentage of students meeting or exceeding state standards. Third-grade reading, 76 percent (state average, 50.2 percent); math, 53 percent (state average: 30 percent). Fourth-grade reading, 73 percent, (58.1 percent); math, 38 percent, (32.5 percent). Fifth-grade reading, 61 percent, (43.5 percent); math, 32 percent, (24 percent). Sixth-grade reading, 62 percent (47.5 percent); math, 33 percent (27.6 percent).
