WAIMEA
'Short sticks' hula lessons

Advertiser Staff

Waimea Valley visitors can learn a traditional hula using the kala'au, or "short sticks," from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Sept. 16 at Waimea Valley Audubon Center.

The simple hula will be taught by Darrilyn Crisostomo, the center's cultural educator.

Participants will learn a song first, then learn the hula motions that go with the words, Crisostomo said, adding that the song and dance were taught to her by one of the kupuna that volunteers at the park.

"It's something to encourage people to keep trying," she said.

The program is open to all ages and costs $3 plus admission to the park.
