1-car crash kills man on Maui

A man was killed yesterday in a single-car crash on Maui's Ulaino Road, 1.1 miles north of Hana Highway.

Police said Douglas Simmons was headed north on Ulaino Road when he lost control of his Honda sedan, which went off the roadway and overturned.

Simmons was thrown from the car and pronounced dead at the scene.

The death was Maui's 17th traffic fatality of the year, compared with 14 by this day in 2006.



2 ACCUSED OF ATTACKING POLICE

Charges are pending against two men arrested on suspicion of attacking police officers.

A Honokai Hale man, 21, was arrested at 1:30 a.m. yesterday on Hekili Street in Kailua on suspicion of striking a male officer, 42, who was attempting to break up a fight involving a group of men.

The man also was being held on an outstanding $50 warrant.

In an unrelated incident, a 44-year-old man with no permanent local address was arrested in Hale'iwa at about 10:30 a.m. yesterday on suspicion of striking and scratching a 38-year-old male officer responding to a robbery complaint.

The man also was held for questioning about the robbery of an elderly woman in front of a store.

The officers attacked were not seriously injured, police said.



MOTORCYCLIST CRITICALLY INJURED

A 37-year-old motorcyclist suffered critical injuries when he crashed early yesterday morning along Kane'ohe Bay Drive, police said.

Traffic investigators said the man was headed west — toward Kane'ohe — when he failed to negotiate a sharp left bend in the road near Malukai Place.

Police said the man and his 2006 Husqvarna motorcycle clipped a low rock wall. Investigators said speed did not appear to be a factor and that the road was dry and moderately lit at that hour. It was unknown whether alcohol or drugs were involved. The accident was reported at about 1:38 a.m.

Police said the driver was taken to The Queen's Medical Center with head injuries and was reported in critical condition.



MAN SUSPECTED OF TOWING STOLEN CAR

A tow-truck driver was arrested for questioning yesterday after a police officer allegedly saw him towing a stolen car in Kalihi.

The man, 47, was booked for second-degree detention of stolen property at 3:20 p.m. The arrest was made fronting 1401 Houghtailing St.



QUAKE REPORTED OFF BIG ISLAND

A small but measurable earthquake took place offshore near the Big Island Saturday night.

The quake, which was assigned a preliminary magnitude of 3.0, occurred at 9:22 p.m., according to the U.S. Geological Survey's Hawaiian Volcano Observatory on the Big Island.

The earthquake's epicenter was reported to be approximately 28 miles west-southwest of Honaunau.



MACHETE SUSPECT NOT YET CHARGED

A 52-year-old man arrested Saturday night for allegedly threatening a woman with a machete in Hau'ula remained in police custody last night but uncharged. The woman, 23, was not injured, police said.

The man was arrested fronting his home at 10:55 p.m. and booked on one count each of first- and second-degree terroristic threatening.
