Video streams, podcasts to capture DOE meetings

By Loren Moreno
Advertiser Staff Writer

As early as next month, the public will have an opportunity to watch live online streams of state Board of Education meetings as a part of the board's continuing effort to make more of its business available on the Internet.

Through a partnership with Apple Inc., the board office has been setting up a server and Web site that will host live streaming video and audio podcasts of meetings, as well as an archive of video from previous meetings and related documents, said BOE executive director Galen Onouye.

Onouye said the video streams and podcasts will provide parents, community members and students who may not be able to attend specific meetings to have an opportunity to listen to the discussion in real time.

"I think there are people who want to go to meetings, but may not be able to get to them," Onouye said, noting that the board's headquarters are on O'ahu but many meetings are held on Neighbor Islands.

The board's office is endeavoring to set up a higher-capacity server to host the video and podcasts.

Cameras capable of streaming online content are already present in the board's committee hearing room in the Queen Lili'uokalani Building. The challenge will be to stream video from the board's Neighbor Island meetings, Onouye said.

An announcement will be made as soon as the Web site becomes available to the public, which is expected to be by the beginning of next month.

Correction: A headline in a previous version of this story about efforts to set up video streams and podcasts of meetings was inaccurate. The efforts are targeting state Board of Education meetings.
