Top chefs and vendors return to the Mauna Lani Resort for the ninth "Evening in Paradise," a fundraiser for Hawai'i Island United Way. The resort's James Beard-nominated executive chef, Edwin Goto, and 11 chefs from Big Island resorts and restaurants host an evening of fabulous food with local entertainment. It's 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Saturday at the Hale Hoaloha Pavilion and outdoor area. Cost is $75; $40 for ages 5 to 11; free for children 4 and younger.

BIG ISLE SHOWCASE
ENJOY TASTE OF THE HAWAIIAN RANGE
More than 30 top Island chefs will participate in Mealani's Taste of the Hawaiian Range from 6 to 8 p.m. Sept. 28 at the Hilton Waikoloa Village. (Mealani, an experimental farm, coordinates the event sponsored by the Cooperative Extension Service of the University of Hawai'i-Manoa's College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources).
This event showcases local produce in gorgeous displays, and challenges chefs to make use of less-premium cuts or unusual cuts assigned to them, from brisket (Ed Kenney of town and Downtown) to shoulder clods (D.K. Kodama of Sansei and d.k Steak House).
