Sabers to play in daylight

Advertiser staff

Because the stadium lights have yet to be repaired, the Kapolei-Campbell football game at Campbell will start earlier Saturday.

The junior varsity game between the schools is scheduled for 11 a.m. with the varsity to follow about 25 minutes after the end of the JV game.

This game was originally scheduled for Friday night, but Campbell's stadium has been without lights since its wiring was vandalized the week of the Aug. 17 Roosevelt non-league game, which was canceled. It had been decided last week that the Kapolei game was to be re-scheduled for 1 p.m., but that was changed again this week to start at 11 a.m. to assure proper lighting by the end of the varsity game.

"We were concerned about light (from the sun) after the game," Campbell athletic director Sam Delos Reyes said. "If it is close to 5:30 (p.m.), it starts getting dark. Then we'll have people (when they're leaving the stadium) with hardly any light, so it becomes a safety issue."

Delos Reyes said a contractor has been awarded the bid to re-wire the stadium's lights, but it has yet to start the work.

The Sabers have only one more scheduled home game on Sept. 29 against Radford. Unless the lights work by then, the game between the Rams and Sabers also will start at 11 a.m., Delos Reyes said.

Campbell's remaining regular season games are away: Oct. 6 at Mililani and Oct. 12 at Leilehua.
