Former University of Hawai'i All-American Heather Bown scored a team-high 22 points, but the U.S. women's national volleyball team fell to Cuba in a hard-fought final of the NORCECA Continental Championship yesterday at Winnipeg, Canada.

Cuba, which broke a string of three consecutive NORCECA championships for the U.S., won, 22-25, 25-18, 19-25, 25-23, 18-16.

Both Cuba and Team USA claimed berths into the FIVB World Cup, which will be held in Japan, Nov. 2 to 16.

Bown had 14 kills on 19 swings to go with a match-high seven blocks and one ace. Ogonna Nnamani added 21 points on 15 kills and a personal season-high six blocks. Robyn Ah Mow-Santos, a McKinley High alum and former UH All-American, and Punahou graduate Lindsey Berg alternated at setter.

Dominican Republic defeated Canada, 25-17, 22-25, 25-23, 20-25, 25-23, in the bronze-medal match.

HILO SWEEPS HPU

Lauren Bayer hit .583 and hammered 16 kills as Hawai'i-Hilo swept Hawai'i Pacific, 30-27, 30-22, 30-24, last night in a Pacific West Conference match at St. Andrew's Priory gym.

Fabiane Seben added 14 kills, Hillary Hurley 13 and Josimara Pinheiro 12 for the Vulcans (7-4, 2-0 PacWest).

Cari Kahn and Kelly Balanay each had eight kills for the Sea Warriors (5-8, 0-2).

BYUH SWEEPS CU

Noelle Filimoeatu had 14 kills and 19 digs as Brigham Young-Hawai'i swept Chaminade, 30-25, 30-14, 30-23, last night in a Pacific West Conference match at Cannon Activities Center.

Faylynn Merrick added 10 kills for the Seasiders (5-5, 1-1 PacWest).

Vanja Radanovic had nine kills and Trina Kauliakamoa eight for the Silverswords (8-2, 1-1).

KAMEHAMEHA FALLS

After suffering its first defeat of the season, Kamehameha dropped to No. 10 from No. 3 in this week's Century Club National Top 100 rankings, released yesterday by PrepVolleyball .com.

The Warriors are coming off a loss to 'Iolani, which rose to No. 35 from No. 47 in the national rankings. 'Iolani and Kamehameha are the only two Hawai'i teams in the top 100.

According to the Web site, Kamehameha is still ranked ahead of 'Iolani because the Warriors beat No. 11 Redondo Union during the Ann Kang Invitational. Redondo Union beat the Raiders in the same tourney.

PrepVolleyball.com also unveiled its list of top 100 players. Kamehameha outside hitter Kanani Herring, a two-time Advertiser All-State Player of the Year, is No. 5. Punahou libero Sydney Yogi is No. 51.

BYUH WOMEN WIN, 2-1

Freshman Natasha Aiono scored two goals as Brigham Young-Hawai'i defeated Notre Dame de Namur, 2-1, yesterday in a Pacific West Conference women's match at Belmont, Calif.

Aiono scored in the 16th minute off a crossing pass from Hailey McKee, then added her second goal a minute later off a free kick pass from Jill Haar to help the Seasiders improve to 5-2-1 overall and 3-0 in the PacWest.

BYUH MEN WIN, 2-1

In a PacWest men's match, Lance Ford scored in the 73rd minute off a free kick pass from Adam Maciejewski as BYUH beat Notre Dame de Namur, 2-1, at Belmont, Calif.

Sam Akinaka scored on a header off a pass from Trenton Reed in the 53rd minute for the Seasiders (5-4, 1-1).

WILDER, NIELSEN FIRST

University of Hawai'i senior Chantelle Wilder won her third race of the season, but Brigham Young University dominated in winning the women's division of the Big Wave Cross Country Invitational yesterday at Kane'ohe Klipper Golf Course on the Marine Corps Base Hawai'i.

Wilder finished the 4-kilometer race in 14 minutes, 34 seconds. BYU runners took the next six places, led by runner-up Cecily Lemmon (14:39) and third-place finisher Anna Sperry (14:44).

BYU scored a low-best 20 points, followed by San Diego State (60) and UH (104).

Hawai'i Pacific, led by Jens Munk Nielsen's first-place finish, won the men's division with 42 points. BYUH was second and UH-Hilo third. Both scored 52 points, but BYUH won by tiebreaker.

Nielsen finished the 5-kilometer race in 16:29, followed by BYUH's Golden Harper (16:33) and HPU's Esben Dalgood (16:40).


MIXED MARTIAL ARTS

JUNK LOSES UFC BOUT

Heavyweight Scott Junk of Kailua lost his Ultimate Fighting Championship debut to Christian Wellisch when he tapped out to a heel hook at 3:19 of the first round last night in Anaheim, Calif., in UFC 76.

New Mexico's Keith Jardine knocked down and upset former UFC light heavyweight champion Chuck Liddell (20-5) by a split decision in a slugfest.

Jardine (13-4-1) won 29-28 on two scorecards while one judge scored it 29-28 for Liddell. Liddell was knocked down by a right hand in the second round of a three-round bout.

Forrest Griffin (15-4) beat Brazilian star Mauricio "Shogun" Rua (16-3) over three rounds and ended the fight with a choke with 15 seconds left.


SURFING

HAWAI'I TEAM PREVAILS

Hawai'i's Andy Irons and Fred Patacchia defeated Australia's Bede Durbidge and Dean Morrison in a Foster's Showdown final yesterday in Hossegor, France.

Irons and Patacchia earned $4,000.

The showdown is an international team challenge event and is part of the Quiksilver Pro France, which did not hold any heats yesterday.


GOLF

HILO PLACES SEVENTH

Hawai'i-Hilo, led by Daniel Kitayama's tie for fourth place, placed seventh in the St. Martin's Invitational yesterday at Olympia, Wash.

Hilo finished with a two-day total of 577. Hawai'i Pacific (599) placed 10th and Brigham Young-Hawai'i (616) 11th in the 13-team field. Sonoma State won with 551.

Kitayama shot 65-73—138 on the par-71, 6,048-yard course. Jarin Todd won with 67-62—129.
