TONIGHT'S MUST-SEE

"Private Practice" debut, 8 p.m., ABC. After the chaos of hospital work in "Grey's Anatomy," Addison (Kate Walsh) wants an easier life. She'll join a fashionable clinic in Santa Monica; living and working alongside the ocean, she'll relax. Don't count on it. Most of her co-workers are in midcrisis; most didn't know she was coming. Shonda Rhimes, the "Grey's" creator, wrote this with her whipsaw ability to go from humor to tragedy, with hints of romance. She added a top supporting cast, led by Tim Daly, Taye Diggs, Amy Brenneman and Audra McDonald.

"Back to You," 7 p.m., Fox. Last week, Chuck (Kelsey Grammer) learned that he and Kelly (Patricia Heaton) have a daughter. Kelly considers his parenting skills suspect. That leads to some big sight gags, involving goldfish. There are hilarious moments.

OF NOTE

"Kid Nation," 7 p.m., CBS. In last week's opener, the kids seemed bright and likable; the grown-ups who run the show seemed like liars. They claimed the buildings were the remains of Bonanza City, N.M. (Actually, it's a film set, built long after Bonanza City died.) They claimed kids would run the show — then meddled constantly. They introduced division, provincialism, competition and other adult traditions.

"'Til Death," 7:30 p.m., Fox. An elderly neighbor's funeral brings responsibility: Joy will sing; Steph will eulogize.

"The War," 8, 10:30 p.m., PBS. The midsection of this seven-week series catches D-Day, with 1.5 million Allied troops staging the largest invasion in history.

"Bionic Woman" debut 8 p.m., NBC. Don't expect the light touch of the old series; this one brings a dark rage. Michelle Ryan plays a normal sort who wakes up with bionic parts, instant doubters and a fierce enemy. The enemy is played by Katee Sackhoff ("Battlestar Galactica"). Their confrontations are a highlight of a mixed show.

"Criminal Minds" and "CSI: NY" season openers, 8 and 9 p.m., CBS. The first one has a campus serial killer; the second has a vigilante pursuing a music star.

"Life" debut, 9 p.m., NBC. Framed for a crime, a cop (Damian Lewis) spent years in prison. Now he's out, with a big settlement and a promotion to detective. He has a mansion and a reason to be offbeat and cynical. The result is in the "House" tradition. There are weekly cases, bouncing off a bitter (and sometimes funny) character.

"Dirty, Sexy Money," 9 p.m., ABC. After all those years in "Six Feet Under" and "Sports Night," Peter Krause tries a show with none of that depth. He plays a decent guy, working for the indecent Darling family. The Darlings are silly stereotypes; we soon tire of them.
