SALT LAKE CITY — Brian Johnson passed for two touchdowns and Derrek Richards had Utah's first punt return for a touchdown in seven years as the Utes beat Utah State, 34-18, yesterday, extending their winning streak to 10 straight in the state's oldest rivalry.

Darrell Mack ran for 132 yards and a touchdown and Louie Sakoda kicked two field goals and ran a fake punt 22 yards to keep a touchdown drive in the third quarter going for the Utes (2-3), who overcame a sloppy start and driving snow to keep the Aggies (0-5) winless.

Richards finished with 135 yards on four punt returns. He broke one for a 75-yard touchdown early in the second quarter that put Utah ahead 14-7 and was Utah's first punt return touchdown since Steve Smith ran one back against California in 2000.

Johnson, who was making his first start since separating his shoulder in the season opener, completed 18 of 29 passes for 181 yards with two interceptions.

Utah State finished with 275 yards of offense, getting 73 in the final quarter as they tried to rally from a 34-10 deficit. The Aggies haven't won in the series since the 1997 season opener, although they did score more against the Utes than they had since a 40-20 loss in 2003 and converted a big mistake by Utah into an early lead.

Utah State plays at Hawai'i on Saturday.

NEVADA 27, UNLV 20

RENO, Nev. — Nick Graziano threw a 43-yard touchdown pass to Kyle Sammons with 27.5 seconds left to lift the host Wolf Pack (2-2) over the Rebels (2-3) for the third year in a row.

Graziano completed 20-of-38 passes for 330 yards and three touchdowns, including a 90-yard score to Mike McCoy in the first quarter, and a 15-yarder to Adam Bishop with 3:02 remaining for the Wolf Pack (2-2).

UNLV had tied the seesaw battle 20-20 with 1:02 left when Travis Dixon threw a 30-yard touchdown pass to Ryan Wolfe on fourth-and-10.

UNLV lost to Hawai'i, 49-14, Sept. 15. Nevada will host Hawai'i Nov. 16.

FRESNO STATE 17, LOUISIANA TECH 6

FRESNO, Calif. — Tom Brandstater hit Jason Crawley with a 17-yard touchdown pass for a 10-6 lead with 7:43 left in the third quarter and Clifton Smith added a fourth-quarter touchdown run to lift host Fresno State (2-2, 1-0) over Louisiana Tech (1-3, 0-2).

Louisiana Tech lost to Hawai'i 45-44 in overtime Sept. 8. Fresno State plays at Hawai'i Nov. 10.

SAN JOSE STATE 34, UC DAVIS 14

SAN JOSE, Calif. — Adam Tafralis passed for four touchdowns and 330 yards to lead the Spartans (2-3) over the Aggies (2-3) in the first meeting between the two schools since 1934, when they played to a scoreless tie.

That was four years before the birth of San Jose coach Dick Tomey, who notched his 304th career victory to move into a tie with Jackie Sherrill for 23rd place on the all-time list.

San Jose State hosts Hawai'i Oct. 12.

NEW MEXICO STATE 20, ARKANSAS-PINE BLUFF 17

LAS CRUCES, N.M. — Chase Holbrook threw for 246 yards and Paul Young kicked a 37-yard field goal with one second remaining to lift the Aggies (3-2) over the Golden Lions (1-4).

The Aggies started the game-winning drive after safety Derrick Richardson intercepted a tipped pass in the end zone with 2:53 to play. Young's kick capped an 11-play drive and accounted for New Mexico State's only points of the second half.

New Mexico State plays at Hawai'i Oct. 27.

TIGERVILLE, S.C. — Eli Byrd threw for 398 yards and four touchdowns as the visiting Buccaneers (2-3) rallied from a 33-24 deficit to beat the Crusaders (1-4).

Charleston Southern lost to Hawai'i, 66-10, Sept. 22.

CAL POLY 56, N. COLORADO 21

SAN LUIS OBISPO — Quarterback Jonathan Dally ran the option to perfection, rushing for four touchdowns and also threw for two more as the host Mustangs (3-2) handed the Bears (0-5) their 13th straight loss.

Northern Colorado lost to Hawai'i, 63-6, Sept. 1.
