Saint Louis' defense bent but did not break and quarterback Micah Mamiya made the most of his season-low five completions last night as the Crusaders held off an improved Kamehameha team, 14-7, in Interscholastic League of Honolulu football action at Aloha Stadium.

Saint Louis, ranked No. 1 in The Advertiser's statewide Top 10 poll of coaches and media, improved to 5-0 overall and 2-0 in the ILH. The No. 8-ranked Warriors fell to 1-2-1 and 0-2.

Austin Wakinekona scored the go-ahead touchdown from 3 yards out with 9:31 remaining in the game. Kamehameha drove to the Crusaders' 28-yard line on the ensuing possession, but Saint Louis defensive back Marcus Umu tipped away a pass in the secondary on fourth-and-14 from the 32.

The Warriors got the ball back with 2:43 left, but again lost it on downs after quarterback Michael Hoke was tackled for no gain on fourth-and-18 from his own 22 with 1:30 remaining.

The Crusaders were then able to run out the clock.

Saint Louis had struck first with a 24-yard touchdown pass from Mamiya to Tamatoa DeMello, and Warren Spencer's extra point made it 7-0 with 4:13 remaining in the first quarter.

Kamehameha tied it with 2:44 left in the half after Truman Chun's 5-yard TD run and Kevin Doo's PAT. The touchdown was set up by Hoke's 44-yard pass to Carl Minns.

Hoke was sharp all night, finishing with 15 completions in 24 attempts for 152 yards, with no interceptions. He also broke free for good gains on a couple scrambles.

Mamiya, the reigning Advertiser State Offensive Player of the Year, struggled throughout the game against tight coverage and a heavy pass rush by the Warriors. He finished 5 of 20 for 103 yards.

The touchdown throw to DeMello was Mamiya's first completion in five attempts, and he had only one other completion — a 30-yarder to Billy Stutzmann — in a 2-for-11 first half.

The percentage didn't get much better in the second half, but a 26-yard completion to Stutzmann on third-and-12 kept a drive alive with 3:48 remaining in the game.

Kamehameha also was called for three pass interference penalties in the first three quarters.
