Ryan Shopshire fired a four-hitter to lift San Jose State over Hawai'i, 4-0, to earn a split of a Western Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader today at Municipal Stadium in San Jose, Calif.
Shopshire (5-0) walked one and struck out 10 in his complete-game for the Spartans (15-12 overall, 6-8 WAC), who dropped the opener 12-5.
Nick Rhodes (1-4) allowed three runs and eight hits with one strikeout in seven innings for the Rainbows (12-20, 4-7), who had a modest three-game win streak snapped.
Rhodes had retired the first 13 batters he faced before Sonny Garza tripled and scored on Anthony Aguilera's single in the fifth inning to give SJSU a 1-0 lead.
The Spartans increased their lead in the sixth on a one out RBI single by Corey Valine and Aguilera's second RBI single of the game to make it 3-0.
The Spartans added a run in the eighth. Garza was hit by a Sam Spangler pitch with two outs and scored when Aguilera reached first safely on third baseman Shane Hoey's throwing error to make it 4-0.
