GOING VEGAS
Vegas shows signs of slowdown

By Anthony Curtis

Concerns about the slow economy and its possible negative effects on Las Vegas are proving justified, as a trio of important indicators were down in January. Visitation fell by 0.6 percent compared with a year earlier, and airport traffic was off by 2.8 percent. Consequently, the Strip gambling win was also down (-1.3 percent). The good news was that the declines were modest, reducing concerns to some degree and reinforcing the belief that Las Vegas retains some of its famed "recession-resistant" qualities.

TOWER SOUR: Plans for a 1,064-foot tower on the site of the former Wet 'n Wild water park on the Strip appear to be in trouble. The 27-acre parcel earmarked for the tower and an associated Crown Las Vegas Casino has been put back on the market. The tower's not toast yet, though — the group says it's continuing to pursue funding to keep the project on track.

DOUBLE DUNKIN': A pair of Dunkin' Donuts outlets have opened in town, marking the first time the chain has had a Las Vegas casino location. The two casinos with the new shops are the Fremont and Sam's Town, and both locations are open 24/7.

EXTRA YARD: The Yard House has opened in the Town Square shopping district at the south end of the Strip. If you like draft beer, this is your place — it offers more than 200 varieties, most priced at about $6 per pint. The restaurant has a big menu, including good clam chowder and French onion soup. Town Square continues to improve, with new shops and restaurants opening every week.

Q. What is happening with the Elvis-themed casino?

A. An SEC filing indicates that the project is still alive, with a $3.1 billion budget and late 2012 completion date. But like many of the drawing-board projects around town, it's not clear if funding has really been secured. If it happens, the project would include a 3,000-room hotel-casino built close to Planet Hollywood.
