Robinson in running for top softball award

All-American Kate Robinson became the first University of Hawai'i softball player to be been named one of 25 finalists for the 2008 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year Award
The award recognizes outstanding athletic achievement by female collegiate softball players across the country. The Top 25 is composed of players representing 18 colleges and 10 different NCAA Division I Conferences and is selected by the Amateur Softball Association, the governing body of softball in the United States.
Robinson continues to lead the nationally-ranked Rainbow Wahine (28-11 overall, 4-1 Western Athletic Conference) with team-highs in average (.385), runs scored (31), hits (47), home runs (14) and RBIs (34). She enters this weekend's series against San Jose State, one home run shy of tying the UH career record of 38, held by former All-American and current Australian national team member, Stacey Porter in 2003.
As a pitcher, Robinson has a 12-3 record with a 1.68 ERA in 100 innings pitched.
SWIMMING
TOM 11TH IN WORLD
Randall Tom, a 2004 graduate of Maui's Seabury Hall, ranked 11th in the semifinal heat of the 100-meter butterfly at the FINA World Swimming Championships yesterday in Manchester, England.
Tom, who attends UC Irvine, clocked 51.69 seconds after qualifying for the semifinals with the second-fastest time (51.45). The top eight qualified for the final heat.
Christel Simms, a Punahou School junior, ranked 29th in the 100-meter backstroke after clocking 1:02.33.

UH TOPS UC SAN DIEGO
Kelly Mason and Leonie Van Der Molen each scored two goals as No. 4 Hawai'i beat No. 17 UC San Diego, 7-5, yesterday in a non-conference women's match at La Jolla, Calif.
Freshman goalie Sara Gralitzer made eight saves for the Rainbow Wahine (15-6).
Senior Kim Hockett made 11 saves for the Tritons (15-16).
