AMELIA ISLAND , Fla. — Lindsay Davenport hopes her next match with Maria Sharapova plays out a little better than her last one.

Davenport and Sharapova set up a semifinal showdown tomorrow in the Bausch & Lomb Championships, winning quarterfinal matches today.

"It's always going to be a challenge against Lindsay," said Sharapova, who is 5-1 lifetime against Davenport but has never faced her on clay. "She's had great success here, and she's always been a tough opponent on any surface. Neither of us are exactly clay court specialists, so we'll just stick to our guns and see what happens."

In the quarterfinals, the top-seeded Sharapova beat No. 10 Alona Bondarenko 6-7 (9), 6-3, 6-2. Davenport, the No. 16 seed and a three-time Bausch & Lomb champion, advanced with a 6-4, 7-6 (3) victory over No. 8 Agnes Szavay.

Sharapova and Davenport last met at the Australian Open, where Sharapova won 6-1, 6-3 in the second round en route to her third Grand Slam title.

"The last few times we've played, she's done everything better than I've been able to do," Davenport said. "She played unbelievable there (in Australia). I thought I was playing well and thought I was ready. She kind of just whipped me off the court. I'm going to try to not have that happen again."

Also today, 18-year-old Alize Cornet upset No. 13 Virginie Razzano 6-4, 6-2 in an all-French quarterfinal. Cornet will face either No. 11 Amelie Mauresmo or Dominika Cibulkova in the other semifinal.

While this is Sharapova's first trip to Amelia Island, Davenport has made it to the final in her last three appearances.

"There's no question this is my favorite clay court tournament to play," Davenport said. "Hopefully by being here for so many years and having some success, it helps me a little bit."
