Hilo man, 60, dies after crashing on highway
A 60-year-old Hilo man died yesterday from injuries suffered in a one-vehicle crash on Mamalahoa Highway near the 22-mile marker close to Pu'uanahulu.
Police called to the scene at 8:53 a.m. determined that the man was driving a 2008 Pontiac four-door sedan south on Mamalahoa when he lost control, ran off the road and hit a utility pole.
The man was taken to North Hawaii Community Hospital, where he died at 10:27 a.m.
Police believe speed contributed to the crash. The man's name is being withheld pending positive identification.
Police have ordered an autopsy.
The death is the 12th fatality on Big Island roads this year, the same as last year.
