UH volleyball loses on road

Paul Carroll had a match-high 21 kills to lead No. 5 Pepperdine to a 31-29, 30-25, 30-17 victory over No. 13 Hawai'i in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men's volleyball last night in Malibu, Calif.

Pepperdine is 13-9 overall and 12-9 MPSF. The Warriors, who have been eliminated from the MPSF playoffs, are 10-16 and 7-14. The two teams end the regular season with a rematch tonight.

Jacob Schkud had a team-high 12 kills. Sean Carney and Joshua Walker each added 11.

The Warriors led 29-28 in the first game, but Pepperdine scored the next three points, including two off UH errors, to seal the victory. The Warriors had eight service errors and four attack errors in the first game.

Pepperdine took a quick 6-1 lead in the second game. The Warriors were able to close to 27-24, but couldn't get any closer.

The Waves blitzed the Warriors in the third game, hitting 61 percent, while the Warriors struggled with just 10 kills with eight errors.


WATER POLO

LONG BEACH STATE RALLIES PAST UH, 10-9

No. 13 Long Beach State scored four goals in the fourth period to upset No. 4 Hawai'i, 10-9, in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation women's water polo match yesterday at Long Beach, Calif.

Long Beach State is 12-13 overall and 4-6 in the MPSF. The Rainbow Wahine are 15-7 and 7-4.

The Rainbow Wahine took a 7-6 lead after three periods. The 49ers scored three consecutive goals to take control in the fourth, 9-7. After a goal by UH's Kelly Mason, the 49ers sealed it with a goal by Dayna Wawrynski. UH's Lisa van Raalte scored the game's final goal.

Angela Turnbull led UH with four goals.


TENNIS

BYUH, HPU WOMEN TO PLAY FOR TITLE TODAY

The top-ranked Brigham Young University-Hawai'i women's tennis team and No. 22 Hawai'i Pacific both won their semifinal matches yesterday to advance to today's championship of the Hawaiian Airlines Pacific West Conference Tournament at St. George, Utah.

BYUH, seeded first in the tournament, defeated Chaminade, 9-0. BYUH improves to 24-0 and has won its last 84 matches. Elwen Li, the top-ranked player in NCAA Division II, Jenny Chin and Ayako Ikeda didn't give up a point in their semifinal wins.

Chaminade, having its best season in program history, falls to 9-14. The Silverswords defeated Grand Canyon in Thursday's opening round.

Hawai'i Pacific defeated Hawai'i-Hilo, ranked 17th in Division II, 5-2. HPU picked up wins at No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 singles and at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles.

The Sea Warriors improve to 19-5 while the Vulcans fall to 12-12.


SAILING

UH PLACES THIRD, MISSES QUALIFYING BY ONE SPOT

The University of Hawai'i coed sailing team fell just short of qualifying for the Intercollegiate Sailing Association's Team Race Nationals after finishing third at the Pacific Coast Sailing Conference Championship yesterday at Long Beach, Calif.

Hawai'i completed the all-day event with a record of 10-5. Stanford finished first and host USC finished second to qualify for next month's nationals. The top two finishers in the district earn a bid for the ICSA National Championship.

Sailing for UH were Mike Scott, Andrew Meade, Mark Spector, William Petersen, Becky Mabardy, Pam Magasinn and Jackie McCloughlin.

After a double-round robin of 12 races, UH advanced to the championship round of four, but were unable to gain ground on the top two teams.

Hawai'i remains in Long Beach for this weekend's PCCSC Coed Dinghy Championship with four berths to the ICSA national semifinals up for grabs.


SOFTBALL

HAWAI'I-HILO SWEEPS TWINBILL AGAINST BYUH

Amanda May tossed a six-hitter and Brianne Adams drove in two runs as Hawai'i-Hilo beat Brigham Young-Hawai'i, 3-1, yesterday to sweep a Pacific West Conference women's softball doubleheader at BYUH Field.

May allowed one unearned run and one walk, while striking out four in seven innings.

In the first game, Christina Pedroza scattered five hits, and Jerica Faasua hit a solo home run and Adams drove in two runs in the Vulcans' 7-3 win.

Pedroza allowed three runs, one earned, and two walks, while striking out three in seven innings.

UH-Hilo improved to 8-8 overall and 7-7 in the PacWest. BYUH dropped to 8-31, 5-17.
