PHOENIX The Arizona Diamondbacks keep knocking around NL West foes, with the kid leading the way.
Justin Upton went 3 for 3 with four RBIs, including a three-run home run, to power the Diamondbacks to their eighth consecutive victory yesterday, a 10-3 romp over the Colorado Rockies.
The 20-year-old outfielder, the first overall pick in the 2005 draft, boosted his average to .415, including five home runs with 10 RBIs.
"When you talk about what the upside of this guy is and the kind of player he's going to be down the road," Arizona manager Bob Melvin said, "I think you're getting a little glimpse of it."
Dan Haren limited the Rockies to a run and five hits in six innings and Arizona improved to 5-0 against Colorado this season. Haren (2-0) struck out seven and walked two.
"I again got an early lead and was able to pretty much attack the strike zone," Haren said. "It was pretty much like the last game. When you score runs early it makes it a lot easier on me and any other starting pitcher."
The Diamondbacks have outscored Colorado 38-10 in the five games. Last October, the Rockies swept Arizona in the NLCS.
"Everything is in sync for the Diamondbacks right now," Colorado manager Clint Hurdle said. "They're a good ball club, and they're clicking. Us, on the other hand, we're not able to put the pitching, the hitting and the fielding together for any consistency."
The Rockies know all about teams on a roll. They had one of the best in baseball history at the end of last season, winning 21 of 22 before being swept by Boston in the World Series.
But there's no consolation that these games aren't in September, Hurdle said.
"Every defeat carries sting," he said. "We're well aware of the fact you can't just kick games away in April. We want to play better, we need to play better and we will play better."
Upton chased Colorado's Franklin Morales with a 429-foot home run onto the concourse in left-center field that blew open a 7-1 lead with no outs in the fifth inning.
BREWERS 5, METS 3: Bill Hall, Rickie Weeks and Gabe Kapler hit homers, and Ben Sheets (2-0) allowed three runs and five hits in 7 2/3 innings as visiting Milwaukee beat New York to ruin Johan Santana's Shea Stadium debut and end a three-game losing streak.
Cardinals 8, Giants 7: Chris Duncan lined a go-ahead single to left with the bases loaded in the top of the 10th and St. Louis battered San Francisco's bullpen to spoil a gem by Matt Cain, who had a no-hitter heading into the seventh that Albert Pujols ended with a leadoff double.
Braves 10, Nationals 2: Jeff Francoeur had two home runs and a career-high seven RBIs, and John Smoltz (2-0) gave up a run on five hits in six innings with five strikeouts leaving him just 14 shy of 3,000 as visiting Atlanta handed Washington its ninth straight loss.
Phillies 7, Cubs 1: Cole Hamels (2-1) allowed one hit over seven innings a fourth-inning double by Derrek Lee and Pedro Feliz and Ryan Howard hit two-run homers to lead host Philadelphia past Chicago.
Pirates 4, Reds 3: Nate McLouth, the surprise major league hits leader, extended hit hitting streak to 11 with two hits, including an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth inning that broke a 3-all tie as Pittsburgh won consecutive games for the first time this season by beating Cincinnati.
Astros 5, Marlins 0: Brandon Backe (1-1) scattered five hits over five innings, getting help from three relievers to complete the shutout, and Lance Berkman hit a two-run homer to lead host Houston past Florida.
Dodgers 11, Padres 1: Andre Ethier went 3 for 5 with a two-run homer, Rafael Furcal and Matt Kemp each hit their first homers of the season, and Derek Lowe (1-0) allowed a run and four hits over eight innings as host Los Angeles routed San Diego to snap a four-game losing streak.

Red Sox 4, Yankees 3: Manny Ramirez hit a solo homer in the fourth and a two-run double in the sixth for a 3-2 lead, Kevin Youkilis followed with an RBI single for a 4-2 lead, and Josh Beckett (1-1) allowed three runs and five hits in 6 2/3 innings as host Boston beat New York.
Orioles 3, Rays 2: Ramon Hernandez, who had a run-scoring triple for a 2-0 lead in the second, hit a tiebreaking two-out solo homer in the top of the ninth inning to help Baltimore rally past Tampa Bay and end a three-game losing streak.
Twins 2, Royals 0: Boof Bonser (1-2), who did not allow a hit for 5 1/3 innings, gave up three hits over six innings and Jason Kubel homered and scored twice, leading visiting Minnesota to its second straight shutout of Kansas City. The Royals have not scored since the first inning of a 6-1 loss to the New York Yankees Thursday night.
Athletics 7, Indians 3: Bobby Crosby hit a three-run homer to cap a four-run seventh, Lenny DiNardo (1-0), starting in place of injured Rich Harden, gave up two runs on six hits over five-plus innings, and visiting Oakland took advantage of 10 walks issued by Cleveland pitchers.
Mariners 8, Angels 3: Richie Sexson hit a tiebreaking, two-run home run, Raul Ibanez homered for the second consecutive night, and Carlos Silva (2-0) gave up three runs and 11 hits over eight innings to lead visiting Seattle over Los Angeles.

SHORT HOPS
Phillies: Philadelphia center fielder and leadoff batter Shane Victorino, a St. Anthony alum from Maui, left yesterday's game against the Chicago Cubs with a strained right calf after grounding out to end the sixth inning. He was placed on the 15-day disabled list. Outfielder Chris Snelling was called up from Triple-A Lehigh Valley to take Victorino's spot.
