Lahaina Aquatics Center closed due to leaks

Advertiser Staff

The 50-meter pool at the Lahaina Aquatics Center has been temporarily closed due to problems with leaking filter elements, according to the Department of Parks and Recreation.

The keiki pool remains open during normal hours.

Acting Aquatics Division Chief Malcolm Cooper said the main pool's aging filtration system has been under scrutiny for several months. The division already was preparing a request for bids to repair or replace the equipment before this week's unexpected shutdown.

Swimmers and water polo teams that use the Lahaina facility are being advised to go to the Kihei Aquatics Center instead.

Cooper said the main pool may reopen within a week after short-term fixes are made. More permanent repairs will be done over the course of the next two to three months, he said.
