Weather: Clear today, but rain is on the way

A surface trough northwest of Kauai will develop into a front on Thursday but is not expected to travel down the island chain, the National Weather Service said.

The front will bring some unsettled weather to the islands including southeasterly winds over the western islands and light easterly winds over the eastern islands.

Trade winds are due to make a return by this weekend, forecasters said.

Here's a more detailed look at the next few days:

Today: Sunny, with a high near 77. South wind between 6 and 9 mph.

Tonight: Scattered showers. Widespread haze. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 67. East wind between 3 and 5 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%.

Thursday: A 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Some of the storms could produce heavy rainfall. Widespread haze. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 77. Southeast wind between 3 and 5 mph. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Thursday Night: Scattered showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 68. Northeast wind around 7 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%.

Friday: Isolated showers. Partly cloudy, with a high near 79. East wind around 14 mph, with gusts as high as 18 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%.

Friday Night: Scattered showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 70. East wind around 11 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%.
